3 Summer “Refreshes” that Will Transform Your Home
With summer in full-swing it’s easy to start noticing that your home could use a little vacation, too. Between packing the kids up for school, running errands, picking the kids up from school, and all of the chores in-between, your home has been put through the ringer over the last nine months. Now is the perfect time to give your space a pick-me-up, and we know just the way to do it. Keep reading for our favorite ways to hit the reset button on your home just in time for summer.
A Swipe of Paint
Committing to a new color for the season can be tricky, especially if spring or summer colors aren’t your cup of tea. Choose instead to clean up your walls and show painted areas some love. Even if it’s just a fresh coat of white paint, a clean swipe can make all the difference between a summer-ready home or one that’s in dire need of some design help. If you’re feeling more adventurous, opt for a cool blue tone, a brave navy sheen, or even a painted design to add some dimension to a blank wall.
Do: Use a darker tone, like navy, to play up white trim or wainscoting. Do a touch-up of paneling and exterior paint, too.
Don’t: Decide on a new color too quickly. Test it to make sure you love it during every time of the day—in the morning light, during the afternoon sun, and at sunset.
Let (Some of) the Light In
Another easy fix for an instantly invigorated space? Swap out your window coverings! These simple trimmings rarely get the maintenance they deserve, and should be paid careful attention to during the warmer months. Choose a cool covering like a roman shade to add a sophisticated touch to your space while upping the style factor of your newly-cooled room. Bonus points if you add multiple styles of window coverings throughout your home. Although they’re perfect for the summertime, they’re cold-season approved, too!
Do: Measure carefully. Sometimes windows have depths or widths that may look normal but often require unique placement or a different material.
Don’t: Be scared to try a new silhouette. Window coverings are perfect for every room in the home, and a design professional can give you an idea of which styles and materials make the most sense in each space.
Get an Accessory Overhaul
Last but certainly not least, do a once-over in each room to check for smaller items like lamps or rugs that may need to be repaired or replaced. Little fixes like swapping out a bulb or a shade on a lamp, or giving the rug a good wash, can brighten up a room in no time. Don’t forget to add summertime-themed accessories throughout the home, too! A fresh vase of flowers, a new piece of art, and a summery throw blanket are cherries on top of a beautifully decorated space.
Do: Use light and bright colors and materials. Fabrics like linen and cotton are perfect for the warmer months, as are airy prints like floral motifs, abstract patterns, and cool contrasting.
Don’t: Swap out big-ticket items like your headboard or large area rugs. These are foundational pieces that act as the base for your seasonal designs. Instead, swap out throw pillows, runners and small pieces of art to make an impactful, yet nuanced, statement.
